An engagement photography session is the precursor and preview to your wedding day! It serves as an announcement and proclamation of your love for each other. Most often, clients use some of their engagement photos in wedding announcements and for “Save the Date” cards. We have received numerous phone calls and photos letting us know that the engagement pictures we shot are now placed proudly around their home. It is amazing going to shoot a wedding and seeing the pictures from the engagement photo session displayed on a table for everyone to see.

Engagement pictures showcase a couple’s love, romance, and affection for each other. Often times, couples don’t realize the importance of such an investment. However, engagement pictures help to bring back the memories of where you came from as a couple, where you love began, where it grew, and how it has come to the future wedding you are now planning.

2) Plan for “Wedding Day Emergencies” (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)

One of the complaints from brides after the event of their wedding day is that she was rushed for time and felt out of control. Make sure to plan, plan, plan, and when you think you have planned ahead enough, plan some more! With my clients, I definitely offer recommendations of makeup artists and hair stylists we have worked with in the past.

A bride should know that these stylists are almost always running late during a wedding day. Make sure you plan yourself out an hour ahead of when you need to be ready. If you are having your hair and makeup done away from your ceremony location, make sure you ride separate from everyone else so that you will not get stuck for time while a bridesmaid or aunt is having her hair finished.

Also, another key thing we recommend a bride do is create a “wedding emergency kit.” Make sure to include some extra touch-up makeup in your kit for lip gloss and powder retouches throughout the day (after all, we are taking your pictures all day long!). Throw in a bottle of water and an energy bar, just in case your oomph starts to take a nosedive. Many brides don’t eat much the week leading up to their wedding and most especially on the day, so make sure your body stays replenished and comfortable. Another good idea: throw in some band-aids! Brides often wear new and uncomfortable shoes on their wedding day and while those fashionable strappy slingbacks look great in your wedding pictures, your feet will be in excruciating pain by the time the reception rolls around.

Unless you are having a family member drive you to and from the ceremony location, to the reception, and wherever your heart takes you afterwards, make sure you are firm and clear with your transportation about pick up and drop off times. We express to our clients that we enjoy being there to catch every moment of the day and hate to see a couple standing around waiting for a ride. Whether you favor a limousine, classic car, or a horse and carriage, insist the driver commit to your time frame for your wedding day. Make sure this is set in STONE!

In addition, we can’t stress enough that it is vital for you to be in control and in charge of your wedding dress. Too often brides designate a WDM (“Wedding Dress Manager”) in the form of a mother, bridesmaid, friend, or relative. This can be disastrous! People can be forgetful and may not have you dress at the moment you need it. Don’t let it out of your control or your sight.

5) Family Wedding Photos (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)

It is common knowledge that when families get together, people become distracted! While I favor a wedding photojournalistic style and don't mind catching unexpected moments and emotions throughout the day, I strongly recommend that you tell family members to be at a location or venue minimum 30 minutes before the actual photos are to commence. This way, you can be sure that the family will arrive early, but more likely, on time. Also, it is a good idea to remind family members that wedding day photography does take time. If you begin family photos before your ceremony, everyone will have to arrive earlier. If after the ceremony, everyone will be a bit later in getting to the reception and guests will have to wait a bit longer. This is expected and common at all weddings, but make sure that family is aware that time will be taken to make sure that your wedding photos come out the way you want them to.

ALSO - Make sure that everyone has directions and knows where they are going. Most likely, your photographer is familiar with the city and can provide detailed directions and routes if need be. If you are having a downtown wedding and are worried about parking, let the family know where to park and how much this might cost. Suggest that they carpool. Do your research to better help your family prepare so that your day will not run behind schedule. Little memos, notes, reminders, emails, texts, anything small, sweet, and concise, are helpful to assure family members that you love and care for them but that this day is very important to you. The wedding photography is your investment and you want to make sure in the nicest way possible that they are able to cooperate with the events of the day.

I recommend finding a photographer that not only has the experience shooting weddings but also has experience shooting all kinds of events. In my opinion, I feel it is important to look at the entire catalog of what a wedding photographer has shot in order to get an idea of their experience, more specifically their wedding photographer catalog. Ask about their experience level and how many weddings they have photographed in the past. Have them show you what they feel to be their "best" wedding photography work. See if you have any favorites in their portfolio collection. Notice whether your reaction when viewing the photographer's photos and if you feel yourself wanting those same style of pictures done for your wedding.

Caliber :: Quality versus Quantity (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)

Where I work, one of the main questions I am asked is, “How many images will I receive?” I constantly assure every client I encounter that the work is based upon a firm belief in quality and not quantity. I have heard so many stories of wedding photographers that work solely on the idea that “more is better.” However, often times the more pictures a photographer strives to get, the more he or she rushes through the shooting process in order to get this many photos. The photographer may have snapped the first kiss as husband and wife but because he or she was hurrying through the process, the exposure value was off, say making the pictures too dark. The faster a photographer runs through taking photos many times runs parallel with the quality of the photographs. More errors are made when hurrying!

Rushing wedding photography compromises the quality and the overall creativity and artistic look of the pictures. A wedding photographer should strive to take the best images possible and never overpromise pictures to his or her clients. You want to make sure you have a photographer that can produce enough images for your special day but also make sure those images are worthwhile and superior work. It is completely understandable that you will want the most pictures possible from your day! Still, a top notch wedding photographer will never compromise quality just to shoot an extra 100 pictures. I feel that the most memorable photos and treasured moments come from the time invested into the photography.

Multiples :: Wedding Photographer “plus one” (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)

Upon booking a wedding photographer, in many cases, a photography package includes more than one photographer, if you feel one is necessary. I have seen so many instances of disappointment from couples that hired a wedding photographer but didn’t choose to hire a second or even a possible third photographer for the wedding. Because one person can only be in one place at one time due to the nature of time and space (and unfortunately there is no way around this!), many moments can be missed along the way. While a primary photographer focuses on the bride and groom during the ceremony, who is there to catch the mother wiping her teary eyes, the bridesmaids catching sentimental glances at each other, or the musicians playing the music as she walks down the isle?

Catching so many different shots and angles requires much movement and time, both of which are difficult to acquire during the middle of a ceremony! I fully recommend that a second photographer is hired in addition to the first in most cases, especially if the bridal party and guest list is over 50 people. From this, you get more shots of the bridal party and the family during the actual ceremony, and more specific moments and memories are captured. For larger weddings, often size 200 or more, I recommend having three photographers. The first for the couple, the second for the family, bridal party, and crowd, and the third photographer often can maneuver around to get creative and “outside” shots of the ceremony from a completely different point of view. You can’t have a primary photographer running around the guests and down the isle to catch each angle! It is so important to think through what shots and angles you truly want from the wedding, then base the number of wedding photographers around what you are hoping to achieve.

We truly enjoy finding those definite moments of significance that often pass by too quickly and capturing them within our lens.

Many of the portraits are set up and posed, incorporating a more traditional approach to wedding pictures. The wedding photographer acts as a director of sorts, guiding the wedding party and guests into formations and poses for photos. Although the main style of shooting for our studio is the Wedding Photojournalistic style, we do have experience in directing and leading wedding parties into the posed group and individual formal pictures.

Color photos look great as well - just make sure to keep the infant's clothing simple and basic. You don't want to distract from the most important thing in the picture - the baby!

Most photographers know that using natural light looks best on a person. So it goes with a baby. If you're shooting during the day, move locations near a window or where there is an abundance of natural light. Another note: flashes SCARE babies. If you flash, the baby will cry. A big scary camera lens is enough, and unless you can flash like a ninja, don't use one. Just don't do it. Flash also flattens out detail in a picture. If you DO need flash, try using a bounce flash technique: bouncing the flash off something else in the room in order to light your subject. Or, utilize a flash diffuser (this shouldn't frighten the child either). If you don't have the bounce flash option and either there is little or no natural light, try increasing your aperture and also increasing your ISO. This seems to be recurring theme in my articles...definitely make a point to use "burst" mode while doing engagement photography. The couple will be nervous, so after they do their initial and stiff pose for the camera (thinking they look natural!), they will loosen up, smile, laugh, look at each other...THOSE are the moments you want to catch more than anything.

Most couples won't think of this amazing idea for engagement pictures, so you should suggest it to them! Offer the idea to go along and shoot a "date night" for the couple. Have them go to the place where they met, their favorite restaurant, or out doing their favorite hobby. Another fabulous engagement photo shoot idea is taking pictures at their engagement party! We just did an engagement shoot like this and the pictures are priceless. Friends, family, and most importantly, the couple, were ALL included!

This helpful hint is especially important when shooting indoors! Shooting in RAW gives you the liberty of having a wider range of exposure adjustments during the editing process. This hint sounds ludicrous for engagement pictures, right?! Well, of course you should take pictures of the couple's faces! But on the flip side, try focusing on things other than just those. Have the bride-to-be lift her foot as if they were kissing, and snap a picture of their shoes from the knee down. Make absolute positive you get that engagement ring in some pictures! Catch her whispering something in his ear. Shoot them from the neck down. All of this is interesting and innovative for the eye.

While engagement photos are absolutely important and vital to your happiness, take a second and r-e-l-a-x. Don't forget to breathe. This will make the engagement photographer happy and more importantly, your fiance!

3) LOTS of h2o (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
Before your engagement pictures, drink lots and lots of water! This will help to hydrate your skin and make you look healthier and more alive. Sometimes the wedding planning process can be pretty stressful (okay who am I kidding?? Almost all the time!), so help your body out and hydrate it as much as possible. After all, we are 75% water anyway...

4) Meet the engagement photographer (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
This is one of the MOST important things you can do! If possible, set up a short meeting in person or over the phone with the engagement photographer to actually talk about your engagement pictures. Give the photographer a feel for your personality and style (which you should know perfectly after hint #1!) and let him or her know what you do want and what you don't want. The more vocal you are, the more your engagement pictures will look like what you want! Engagement photographers like direction from couples so they aren't shooting in the dark....well, you know what I mean.

5) Color coordinate (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
This is usually an area handled by more ladies than men, so remember to color coordinate your clothes! Engagement photos look so much more cohesive when the couple looks like they actually GO together. Another hint: NO khaki or light colors. If you're planning to wear these colors, make sure you know the location of your shoot. It is difficult to adjust the exposure balance with lighter colored clothes, especially when shooting engagement pictures outside. Another good idea - bring options!

6) Makeup - wear some (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
This goes out to all my ladies reading this. You may prefer to go au naturale in real life but in engagement pictures, many of which are done outside in the bright sunlight, your beauty just won't translate into the camera lens. If you don't know how to do your makeup, have a friend do it for you, or ask the photographer if he or she offers a makeup artist. Wear foundation!! This will help to even out your skin tone and create a better base for the camera to read and flash off of. Use skin highlighters on the inner corners of your eyes, your upper brow bone, and your cheekbones. Google makeup tips online. Just make sure you're wearing enough to feel comfortable, but maybe a bit more than normal so your engagement pictures will show you looking your best!

7) Put the F-U-N in engagement pictures! (umm...?) (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
We have seen couples get so nervous when it comes to doing their engagement shoot, so to combat becoming stiff and mummy-like, plan a shoot that is creative and FUN. Plan it where you both first met, where you had your first date, where you shared your first kiss (and make sure you have a picture taken of you doing it again!), walking around your favorite restaurant, anything creative and fun will translate to personality on camera.

8) "Trash the engagement" (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
So, you've heard of "trash the dress," right? This idea can add a ton of variety to engagement pictures! Head out to where there are fountains or water somewhere. Take pictures in the rain. Do things that otherwise might seem taboo for an engagement photo shoot and add them into yours. Get dirty and messy! Have a food fight. Play in the mud (if you're brave...). You'll not only have fun during the engagement shoot, but you'll LOOK like you're having fun too.

9) Relax and be social (We chose this subtitle because XYZ)
Just because you have a camera lens shoved in your face doesn't mean you should forget your social manners. R-e-l-a-x and make sure you both interact with each other more than anything. Engagement photographers know what they're doing, so don't worry about them. You guys act like you're in love (well, you are, right?) and let the photographer worry about the rest. The point of engagement pictures is to portray your sappy sweet mushy gushy love for each other before your big day arrives. So let your inner cuddle bug loose!

These are just a few ideas to help you prepare for your engagement pictures and also to ensure you have a successful and positive engagement shoot. Your engagement is the preview before your wedding, so make it exciting and interesting! Show everyone how in love you really are.
